Note to Public Policy Professor

WaPo: ■ The governors of Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee said they would start relaxing restrictions intended to curb the spread of the virus. Plans to reopen were also moving forward in Ohio, where a state prison has become the country’s largest-known source of coronavirus infections.

It is funny that U.S. policymakers are focusing on economic stimulus response, when the best thing we could do for business right now is to exercise extreme social distancing measures to return to optimal health. As noted in our credit-claiming class, politicians want to be remembered for their assistance. A policymaker should incorporate health measures, but a politician should hand out a check. It is much easier to be remembered as the distributor of a check than as a fluid member of a long-term community effort to limit an invisible virus. A good tell for poor policy is a quick fix.
